Caring for Your Pet If They Pass During the Holidays
We understand how difficult this time can be, and you may feel unsure about what to do. If your pet passes away while we are closed, here’s a gentle guide to help you care for them until we can arrange collection.
Find a Quiet, Cool Place
- Choose a cool and quiet room where your pet can rest undisturbed.
- Lower the room temperature if possible – this can be done by opening windows, closing curtains, and keeping any heating turned off.
- If you have access to a garage or utility space that remains cooler than the main home, this can also be suitable.
Wrap Your Pet with Care
- Gently place your pet on a towel, blanket, or pet bed for comfort.
- Wrap them loosely in a clean blanket, sheet, or towel to keep them dignified.
- If your pet is small enough you could place them in a bag to keep them safe from flies and to limit odour.
Keep Them Cool
- Ideally, keep your pet in a room below 10°C (50°F) where possible.
- If the temperature in your home is warmer, you can place a cooling aid on top of their cover sheet, such as frozen water bottles or wet towels.
- Replace or refreeze cooling aids as needed to maintain a low temperature.
It’s natural to want to sit with your pet, but try to limit movement or repositioning, as this can cause unnecessary stress during an already emotional time.

A Note on Respecting Your Feelings
This is an incredibly hard time, and it’s important to take care of yourself, too. Sit with your pet if it feels right, talk to them, and allow yourself time to grieve.
We’re here for you. As soon as we reopen, we’ll help you arrange your pet’s collection and ensure their farewell is as gentle, personal, and dignified as they deserve.
